Doulas are one way to help solve the social justice issue of significant disparities in maternal and infant outcomes based on race. Doula funding has been shown to have the ability to minimize healthcare costs beyond those directly related to the perinatal period by reducing serious and recurrent race-based inequalities in maternal health outcomes, empowering women to take control of their own healthcare needs in general, and empowering women to take charge of their own healthcare needs in general.
